This is one of the most expensive parts of having a fence installed. So why not try your hand at it and save money?
What you need:
Bags of ready-mixed concrete (a 20kg bag is all you need for a single post)
A post-hole digger. If you have quite a few posts to plant, rent a motorised digger. If you need only to plant one or two, a manual version will do the trick nicely. An 8-foot tall post will need a 2-feet deep hole.
4x4 posts are the most convenient for most common uses (simple garden fence, not too high).
How to proceed?
Dig a hole, 2 feet deep.
Place the post in the hole and make sure it is vertically straight (use a masons level).
Although you can mix concrete and water prior to using it, it is more convenient – and as effective – to put the concrete mix dry in the hole and gradually water it until set.
Check the level one last time before the concrete sets. If you have problems with holding the post, you can brace it by nailing sticks that will be removed after the concrete has set.
