Choosing a lawn mower
A vast majority of Australian households enjoy a patch of grass, from a tiny green square to acres of land. But whatever the size, you need a lawn mower to keep it neat.
Non-powered push mowers
These are ideal for small patches of grass. Make sure you keep the blades sharp (every second year or so) and that you mow the lawn regularly, as it is asking for much effort to cut long, thick grass. They range from $50 to $175 for the top of the range. But what makes it work well or not is elbow grease!
Powered push mower
By far the most popular choice. Fuel-powered mowers are the most popular but you can also get electric or battery-powered models. It is simply a case of choosing which is more practical to your garden. Fuel-powered mowers are available in two stroke or four stroke models. What you need most of all from your mower is reliability so it is a good idea to go for a well known brand. These may be a little more expensive but you have the reassurance that they are easy to start and use, easy to service, and will last.
Ride-on mowers
Ideal for larger expanses of grass (from 200 sq.m onward) or tricky terrain. Ride on mowers start in price from around $2300 for the cheapest model, and go all the way up to around $15,000 if you want a state of the art model. Most popular are those that are priced in the $2300 to $6000 bracket.
