Things to keep in mind when planning a garden
Exposure: vegetables need at least eight hours of sun per day. If you decide to plant flowers and decorative plants, your choice will be directed with how much sun/shade your patch has.
Planning: after observing the exposure of your garden, mark the sunny and shaded areas. That will help you in your options. If you are planting vegetables, divide your patch in 4x4 m plots. Fence it to protect it from unwanted visitors!
Soil: if you plant flowers, you might like the soil to lead your choices. But if you want vegetables, you will need to amend the soil so that it meets the requirements for best results.
Harvest: for vegies, make sure you plant seasonal varieties. And make sure you plant what you would like to eat in quantities you can deal with!
Colours: plan your flowers blooming period so that you have colour in your garden all year round. Also try to match the colours, avoid clashes...
